Meanwhile, while waiting for Vault

two perfect short novels: The Island, R. J. Price (Two Ravens Press);

                                                    Beside The Sea, Veronique Olmi, tr. Adriana Hunter (Peirene Press).

Both depict the closest relationships possible – between mother and sons, father and daughter, drawn with delicacy and honesty; both written with the spare tautness of poetry, in Price’s case, drama in Olmi’s; both leading to devastating climaxes, terrifying in Olmi’s, bathetic thus powerful in Price’s; both controlling and conveying their themes in a little over 100 pages; both of them gripping and very, very moving.

You should be reading these now, if you haven’t already. Because you still have five months to wait.
